Sterile processing technicians work at hospitals in Central Sterile Services Departments (CSSD), operating rooms and emergency departments. There are traveling positions available as well for some healthcare facilities.

Education: Obtain a high school diploma or GED.
Training: Enroll in a Sterile Processing Technician program at a community college, vocational school, or online. Programs typically take 6-12 months and cover sterilization techniques, infection control, and medical equipment handling. Our program here at USCI can be completed in 4 months.
Certification: While Ohio doesn’t require certification, earning a credential like the CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) can boost job prospects. If you pursue CRCST certification from HSPA, it’s required that you pass the certification exam and complete 400 hours of hands-on experience in a Central Service department. These hours can be completed before testing or within 6 months of passing the exam. Please note that you are responsible for obtaining the 400 hours of hands-on experience once you finish our Sterile Processing Technician course- USCI will not provide this training.
