Sterile processing technicians work at hospitals in Central Sterile Services Departments (CSSD), operating rooms and emergency departments. You can also find jobs in outpatient surgical centers, dental and orthodontic offices, clinics, labs, vet clinics and hospitals, medical equipment manufacturers, and government and military facilities. There are traveling positions available as well for some healthcare facilities.

Education: Complete a high school diploma or GED. Enroll in a sterile processing technician training program, often offered at community colleges or technical schools. Programs typically take a few months to a year. Our program here at USCI can be completed in 4 months.
Certification: While not always mandatory in North Carolina, obtaining certification increases job prospects. If you pursue CRCST certification from HSPA, it’s required that you pass the certification exam and complete 400 hours of hands-on experience in a Central Service department. These hours can be completed before testing or within 6 months of passing the exam. Please note that you are responsible for obtaining the 400 hours of hands-on experience once you finish our Sterile Processing Technician course- USCI will not provide this training.
