Sterile processing technicians work at hospitals in Central Sterile Services Departments (CSSD), operating rooms and emergency departments. You can also find jobs in outpatient surgical centers, dental and orthodontic offices, clinics, labs, vet clinics and hospitals, medical equipment manufacturers, and government and military facilities. There are traveling positions available as well for some healthcare facilities.

Education: Enroll in a sterile processing technician program at a community college or vocational school. These programs typically take a few months to a year and include coursework in infection control, sterilization methods, and medical terminology. Our program here at USCI can be completed in as little as 4 months.
Certification: While not always required, certification increases job prospects. If you pursue CRCST certification from HSPA, it’s required that you pass the certification exam and complete 400 hours of hands-on experience in a Central Service department. These hours can be completed before testing or within 6 months of passing the exam. Please note that you are responsible for obtaining the 400 hours of hands-on experience once you finish our Sterile Processing Technician course- USCI will not provide this training.
