Meet Basic Requirements – You typically need a high school diploma or GED.
Complete a Phlebotomy Training Program– Enroll in a state-approved phlebotomy program, which includes classroom instruction and hands-on training. Programs are available at community colleges, technical schools, and healthcare facilities. Our program here at USCI can be completed in 3 months.
Earn Certification (Optional but Recommended) – While Pennsylvania doesn’t mandate certification, employers prefer candidates with certification from organizations like the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or American Medical Technologists (AMT). Phlebotomy Technician graduates may sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam via the NHA’s Pre-Externship Route; however, graduates will need hands-on experience completing a minimum of 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks or finger sticks on live individuals, following completion of the program to receive certification. This experience is not included in the program. Graduates must complete this experience within 90 days of passing the CPT exam and are responsible for securing their own experience site. Students must contact local blood testing providers (e.g., Labcorp or Quest), hospitals or doctor’s offices to seek out live experience opportunities.
Apply for Jobs – Look for opportunities at hospitals, clinics, labs, and blood donation centers. Some employers offer on-the-job training. Our career coaches (included in your program) will assist you with preparing your resume and be a guide for you during your career preparation process.
