What is National Medical Assistant Day
Updated July 2023 by: Bridget Ramsey
Medical assistants play a crucial role in a medical team. Their job serves both patients and providers, so without them, both sides of the medical experience would suffer. To honor their dedication to patient care, the American Association of Medical Assistants (the AAMA) has created a week in October to stop and acknowledge the great work medical assistants do.
Held the third full week in October, Medical Assistant Recognition Week (MARWeek), also includes Medical Assistant Recognition Day (MARDay) on that Wednesday. Every year, organizations come together to celebrate the medical assistants on their care team during that time in October.
MARWeek also helps serve as a jumping-off point to share more about what makes a medical assistant so special. Even though we have probably all come in contact with one or two during any given doctor's visit, many people don’t know what role they play. MARWeek gives medical assistants the opportunity to share what they do.
Here are a few ways to celebrate the medical assistant in your life!
Ways to Celebrate the MA in Your Life
Share Your Gratitude
Get loud about how much you appreciate the work medical assistants do! Help them spread the word of how their job impacts patient care. Recognize the expertise they have and the challenging work they do to help patients and doctors achieve a positive outcome. Reminder - Say thanks to the medical assistants you see all the time and not just during MARWeek or MARDay!
Support their Continued Education
Working in the medical world requires continuing education classes and other training. Some medical assistants may even complete enough training to get a certification in phlebotomy or medical coding and billing. This can be called ‘Certification Stacking’ and will help medical assistants be even more valuable to their teams. These classes and courses can be both physically and financially challenging, however! It could make a huge difference to the medical assistant in your life if you came alongside them while they work to better their skills.
Write Positive Reviews
Had a great experience with a medical assistant during your last medical care visit? Don’t be afraid to call them out by name as an awesome team member. It’s important to recognize more than just a primary provider when we talk about our care experience.
Post MARWeek or MARDay Graphics on Social Media
Every year, the AAMA creates graphics we can share to our personal and professional social media pages to share our gratitude. It’s an easy way to say thank you!
