Are you a homeschool or online high school student who is considering pursuing college? Preparing for college as a homeschool or online school student may require a bit more planning, but you can still set yourself up for success. Not sure where to start? We’ve got you covered. We’ve listed a few of the most common questions students have when they’re applying for college as a nontraditional student.
When Should I Start Planning for College?
As soon as possible! The best time for a high schooler to start preparing for college is as early as possible. The sooner you begin preparing, the easier it will be to complete the application process.
What Are the Admission Requirements?
Check the admission requirements for the colleges you are interested in attending. College requirements vary; many require a minimum GPA, minimum standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, personal essays, and more. Understanding the requirements of colleges you are interested in early will help you ensure you will meet all the requirements, which will make the process easier.
Do I Need to Take A Standardized Test
Many colleges require standardized tests like the SAT or ACT for admission. Make sure to take these tests and prepare well in advance to get a good score. There are many ACT and SAT test preparation books and course that can help you prepare for these standardized tests. Getting a good score will help your chances of getting into your choice school!
Does My Academic Record Matter?
Your academic record is essential for most colleges. Focus on your studies and ensure you have a strong academic record. Take challenging courses that will prepare you for college-level work. Keep track of your grades and transcripts, and ensure that they are accurate and up-to-date.
Do I Need To Do Extracurricular Activities
Participating in extracurricular activities shows colleges that you have a well-rounded personality and are capable of balancing your academic and personal life. Consider joining a club or volunteering for community service to build your resume.
Do I Have To Do It Alone?
You do not have to go through the process alone! Seek guidance from college counselors, most colleges will have counselors that will help you through the application process! Some homeschool institutions or online programs will also have counselors, instructors, or coaches that will help prepare you. They can help you understand the application process, provide feedback on your essays, and guide you in choosing the right courses and activities to meet your college goals.
What Else Can I Do To Build My Resume?
Consider taking online courses, even if you’re a homeschool student, consider taking classes online! Online courses can be a great way to build your academic credentials and demonstrate your ability to work independently. Some schools offer elective classes or programs that will help you narrow down your areas of interest and prepare you to choose a major.
Overall, preparing for college as a homeschool student may require a little more effort. If you plan for the future and take your academic success seriously though, you can have all the same results a traditional student would!
