Course Outline

Our affordable program will teach you everything you need to know through practical instruction on researching and assigning diagnostics and procedural codes to medical records, as well as processing medical bills, and includes overviews of common claim forms, medical terminology, and ethical issues for healthcare professionals. Our course teaches students how to comprehend, navigate, and apply current CPT and ICD-10-CM code sets in a variety of healthcare settings. Graduates of our course will be trained in the theoretical instruction and practical skills that prepare them to gain entry-level medical coding and billing positions in a variety of medical settings, such as physicians’ offices, hospitals, clinics, ambulatory care centers and billing services, or even your own home.

    Prerequisites: A High School diploma or equivalent is required to be a medical coding and billing professional. You must also be at least 16 years old.

    Enroll in an accredited medical coding and billing program such as ours to gain the needed skills through our interactive learning modules and career support. Our program is typically completed in 4-9 months.

    You’ll now be prepared to pass the CBCS exam (administered online or in person by the NHA) or the CPC-A® exam (administered online or in person by the AAPC). Both exams are great options. We can assist you in deciding which to take. The exam cost is included in your tuition, along with a practice test and study materials. You are not required to take a certification exam, however taking this additional step will help you market yourself to potential employers and validate your knowledge in Medical Coding and Billing. USCI recommends completing a program and taking the CBCS exam through the National Healthcare Association.

Medical coders and billers play an important part of the healthcare revenue cycle. They are responsible for assigning patient diagnoses, procedures, and visits into medical codes then filing and managing the medical claims to ensure patients are billed properly and the doctor and medical practice is paid for their services. Yes, there are opportunities to work from home as a medical coder and biller!
